I was brave
She was reckless
We were trouble

Best friends Caddy and Rosie are inseparable. Their differences have brought them closer, but as she turns sixteen Caddy begins to wish she could be a bit more like Rosie – confident, funny and interesting. Then Suzanne comes into their lives: beautiful, damaged, exciting and mysterious, and things get a whole lot more complicated. As Suzanne’s past is revealed and her present begins to unravel, Caddy begins to see how much fun a little trouble can be. But the course of both friendship and recovery is rougher than either girl realizes, and Caddy is about to learn that downward spirals have a momentum of their own.
I have to admit that I nearly put down this book after the first few pages when I saw Caddy's list of milestones number two by her next birthday.

2) I would lose my virginity.

I have a problem about a girl trying to lose her virginity. I'm not a fan of it and I never understand why is this an important issue for girls her age. But, I decided to give this book a chance. I hate to judge only after a few pages.

Still, there are a few other occasions when I really wanted to DNF this book, mostly because of Caddy's character. She sounds like a good friend, but there are a few occasions when I wanted to smack her real hard because of her jealousy, selfishness. Caddy and Suzanne are teenagers who hurt people around them for selfish reasons. I stay around to the last page hoping the characters will grow up.

Overall, I thought that this is an okay read on friendship.  I can't relate to the characters and I didn't really care about what happened to them until the last few chapters. It was shocking what happened to them. But I'm happy with how the author wraps up the story.

You’ve heard the saying, ‘opposites attract’ haven’t you? Well meet 27 year old Alex Marshall, a party girl with a penchant for free flowing Prosecco, and her devilishly handsome scientist boyfriend, Charlie, who loves jazz and dinner for two.

Alex and Charlie are together for 11 blissful months until Alex goes out of town and does something she will later regret. Was she drunk? You bet. Does she want Charlie to know? Well what do you think?

With the couple about to spend their first Christmas together will Charlie be the forgiving kind or will Alex be Single by Christmas?

This is a feel good, Christmas novel with very few mince pies, not much snow and absolutely no mistletoe – just a couple of best friends, a sociopathic nemesis and a lot of drinking.

Alex had a good life. She had her friends and a wonderful boyfriend. Alex and her boyfriend, Charlie may have different personalities and they have been together for a while. They were happy, but, their relationship is slowly slipping with Alex's priorities sets on something else.

I love this book. I admit that I wasn't a big fan of Alex. She loves partying and was a bit of an airhead. She may not be a good girlfriend, but she is definitely a good friend. Alex would always try to be there with her friends whenever they had issues. I love Charlie. He's really nice and patient to Alex. There have been a few times when I thought that he may be too good for Alex. But I'm really happy with how the story wrapped up too.

I love Rosa Temple's writing style. It was really easy to get into. The plot is straightforward but enjoyable. I love Alex's interaction with the people around her. And I definitely enjoy watching how Alex grew up in this book.

The book didn't have a lot of Christmassy feeling to it, but still, if you're looking for a light romance, I would definitely recommend this book.

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for my review.

Excerpt

You might be wondering what I was doing, sitting in a graveyard at five minutes to midnight on Christmas Eve. And if you guessed gravedigger or graverobber, you’d be wrong. But ask yourself, who sits in a graveyard when it’s cold and out and out spooky unless it’s absolutely critical? The church, where I attend Midnight Mass with my family every year, is just across the way. But sitting on that particular bench just inside the graveyard was absolutely critical.

You see, in the lead up to Christmas I managed to lose something. Well, not something, someone. Charlie; my reason for living, my heart, my soulmate … you get the idea. And before you start crying, don’t worry, he wasn’t buried there. At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure where Charlie was, but he knew I was there. Waiting.

By the stroke of midnight I would have known for sure if I’d truly lost him. I’d asked him to join me and my family for the service. They’d arrived earlier. I smiled and greeted them all – Mum, Dad, big sister, Elise, and her husband and my younger sister, Jo-Jo. They asked where Charlie was and I managed to hide my worst fears and say he’d be along soon, that he was held up. So they just kissed me and piled inside with the rest of the congregation.

My family had been looking forward to seeing Charlie, even more so than they were me. You see, like everyone who meets Charlie, they’d fallen in love with him. Who could blame them? He’s charming, he’s intelligent, he’s sweet, kind, generous. The list could go on. I admit those things weren’t what first attracted me to Charlie. No, the attraction was pure lust and desire. He walked into that New Year’s Eve party the year before and I was stunned into silence. And I’m never silent. Tall, well dressed, mesmerising looks and those dimples that appear every time he smiles, which he does a lot by the way.

And I love Charlie’s family, too. His mum, Leeza, his dad, Don, who Charlie gets his looks and sense of humour from, and his brother. I wasn’t sure Leeza approved of Charlie having a white girlfriend, at first, but I realised that was just paranoia on my part. His family are not like that. His mum, who I grew to admire and love, was just being protective, the way some mothers are.

But, I digress. My family had no idea that I’d seen Charlie twenty-four hours prior to the service and that we’d had a heated argument and that Charlie had practically slammed a door in my face. Minutes before that I’d made a complete and utter fool of myself in front of his wonderful family and he’d walked away with such disgust and disappointment in his face my heart broke in two. He’d closed the door on me but I hadn’t stopped sending begging texts and hysterical voicemails just so he would show up on Christmas Eve – like he’d promised me. I wasn’t expecting a miracle, just praying for one. Because it would have taken a miracle for Charlie to walk towards the church, bypass the tall wooden doors, see me on the bench, push open the graveyard gates and tell me he’d forgiven me.

With everyone nice and warm inside the church, I continued to sit watching puffs of vapour appearing in front of my face from every exhale, brimming with an apology that may never be heard.

You might be saying, “If Charlie’s that wonderful, why couldn’t he just come to the church, it’s Christmas after all?” You have to know, he’d never be that unforgiving without very good reason.

Honestly? It took a whole year of knowing Charlie to finally understand what it is to love someone completely and to be loved the very same way in return and just one month to lose it all.

And this is how …

The only person she can lean on to tell the truth is her best friend Heath.

Only…did he gets hot recently? That won’t make things awkward between them…right?

I've previously read Laura Barnard's Porn Money and Wannabe Mummy. I was intrigued when I heard that the author is writing for Young Adult.

Savannah's life was changing. Her family was forced to move into a smaller place her mother's business failed. And now, her brother, Dylan has gone traveling to Australia with his girlfriend. Savannah was afraid that she was going to stay as a virgin, but now, she got a boyfriend, Zach. However, she can't stop thinking about her best friend, Heath.

Heath, Cliffs & Wandering Hearts is full of drama and friendship. But, I have to warn that there was a few scene are not suitable for children. Savannah and her girlfriends were constantly worried about boys, and how their peers see them. Sometimes, they made some reckless decisions. I have to say that I was worried about all partying scenes. There seem a bit too many parties going on. But it was interesting to see how they overcome their teenage life as friends.

My favorite character from this book is definitely Savannah's Nan. She didn't act like how a normal grandma always does, despite her age. Heath would come  in second. I love how he always take care of Savannah.

Heath, Cliffs & Wandering Hearts is definitely an interesting read. I enjoyed the author's voice. But, there are some scenes that I don't think was necessary and the ending was a bit too rushed in my opinion.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my review.

Imogen and her friends have had their fill of budget holidays, cattle-class flights and 6am offensives for a space by the pool. So when one of the group wins a VIP holiday at Barcelona's hippest new hotel, they plan to sip champagne with the jet set, party with the glitterati and switch off in surroundings of unapologetic luxury. But as they mingle with movie stars, mafia bosses and millionaires, it becomes clear - with riotous consequences - that even in the most glamorous of locations, things can go wrong.
The Time of Our Lives is about Imogen and her best friends, who went on a holiday after one of them wins a VIP holiday at Barcelona's hotel. But it seems that their holiday is not going as they planned. I love Jane Costello's books for her writing style and humor. But I find that I didn't enjoy this book as her other books.

The Time of Our Lives has a really good premise. I love the idea of the three best friends going on  a holiday, doing a few crazy stuffs and having fun. I am a bit irritated with Imogen and the phone calls from work that always interrupt their vacation. I want to see the best friends to really have fun on their holiday. But still, I do enjoy Imogen's conversations with her boss and how they were trying to figure out the new crisis at work.

Jane Costello never fails to make me laugh with her books. Imogen and her friends, Meredith and Nicola are fun characters. They went through a few mishaps on their stay, but that didn't stop them from enjoying the vacation. If you love chick-lit which feature friendship, a bit of drama and romance that will surely make you laugh, you should definitely read this book.

Review: Terminal by Kathy Reichs & Brendan Reichs

Terminal (Virals #5)
by Kathy Reichs & Brendan Reichs

Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Suspense, Young Adult
Publication: Published March 26th, 2015 by Arrow (Young)
Format: Paperback, 400 pages

The Virals are back—but they’re not the only pack in town anymore. Terminal finds Tory Brennan—grandniece of the famous forensic anthropologist (star of the hit show Bones)—and the rest of the Morris Island gang tracking a pack of rogue Virals who call themselves the Trinity. The new pack was infected by a strain of supervirus created by Tory’s nemesis and sometimes-crush, Chance Clayborne, who accidentally infected himself, too.

These red-eyed Virals have openly challenged Tory’s pack for domination of Charleston, bringing on the attention of a shadowy government organization intent on learning the secret to their powers. Surviving it all is going to test the limits of the gang’s abilities.

Terminal is amazing! I can't say how much I love the Virals. At the end of the previous book, the Virals learned that Chance Claybourne was infected with the virus and there was a new pack in town. A pack called Trinity. Tory and the gang, along with Chance Claybourne have to find out about the new pack before they attract the attention of a government organization who were after their power.

Like every other Virals book, Terminal was packed with action and suspense. The Virals have to deal with the new pack and the secret organization. I am amazed with the friendship between the Virals and absolutely in love with the bits of romance between Tory/Ben/Chance. But, of course, Tory's choice was obvious from the beginning.

Kathy Reichs & Brendan Reichs were very good authors. The storyline was amazing. The characters were great. I love how Tory and the Virals investigate things, with their curious nature. I just can't stop reading once I have this book in my hand. I wanted to know what will happen to the Virals and how will they escape from each danger they faced. I was heartbroken with the story towards the end, but, the authors got me excited again with the ending. Thankfully, there's a novella after this book. Hopefully, the writers will explain to us what happened to Tory and the Virals. I just need the novella in my hand, then, I can relax. Hopefully.

Virals will always be one of my favorite series of all time. It was sad to know that this is the final book for the Virals series, especially with how the story ends. I'm definitely going to miss the pack so much.

If you haven't read the book and the series, I recommend that you will start now. It was amazing. If you like a kick-ass heroine who faced a lot of dangerous situations because of her curiosity nature, you will definitely enjoy this book.

When Jason Marshall's younger sister passes away, he knows he can count on his three best friends and soccer teammates--Mario, Jordie, and Chick--to be there for him. With a grief-crippled mother and a father who's not in the picture, he needs them more than ever. But when Mario starts hanging out with a rough group of friends and Jordie finally lands the girl of his dreams, Jason is left to fend for himself while maintaining a strained relationship with troubled and quiet Chick. Then Jason meets Raine, a girl he thinks is out of his league but who sees him for everything he wants to be, and he finds himself pulled between building a healthy and stable relationship with a girl he might be falling in love with, grieving for his sister, and trying to hold onto the friendships he has always relied on.

A witty and emotionally moving tale of friendship, first love, and loss, Breakaway is Kat Spears at her finest.

I think I've been reading a few books with the main character dealing with loss, recently. In Breakaway, Jason was grieving over his younger sister. It wasn't easy with his grieving, mother and a father who wasn't really in the picture. Thankfully, Jason had his friends with him, Mario, Jordie and Chick. But their friendship soon went astray when Mario started to hang out with his new friends, and Jordie got himself a girlfriend. Then, Jason met Raine, a girl who was out of his league on a double date with Jordie. I think, the story reminds me to How to Be Brave by E. Katherine Kottaras.

If I have to judge the book by its cover, I wouldn't expect to read about dealing with loss, depression or drug addiction. But those are a few issues in Breakaway.

Kat Spears did a great job with writing Breakaway in Jason's point of view. The stories started out nicely, and I do enjoy reading about Jason and his friends. It was sad to see how they started to go apart, especially when Jason was dealing with his loss. The romance between Jason and Raine was alright. There are a few dramas, and sweet moments. I guess the Breakaway by Kat Spears was an alright read if it wasn't for the ending. I'm a bit dissatisfied with how the story ended. It didn't really resolve a lot issues in the book. It was so sudden and lazy.

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher/Netgalley in exchange for my review.

Reeling from her mother's death, Georgia has a choice: become lost in her own pain, or enjoy life right now, while she still can. She decides to start really living for the first time and makes a list of fifteen ways to be brave - all the things she's wanted to do but never had the courage to try. As she begins doing the things she's always been afraid to do - including pursuing her secret crush, she discovers that life doesn't always go according to plan. Sometimes friendships fall apart and love breaks your heart. But once in a while, the right person shows up just when you need them most - and you learn that you're stronger and braver than you ever imagined.

How to Be Brave is a sweet story about Georgia who had lost her mother a few months ago and she was trying to be brave and living her life like her mother wanted her to. With the help of her friend, Liss, Georgia made a list of ways to be brave, things that she was afraid to do and new things that she wanted to give a try. But things don't always go the way she expected.

I truly enjoyed Georgia's story to be courageous after her mother's death. She tried to think of positive thoughts and I love her bucket list. The first half was absolutely entertaining. I love Georgia and how the author portrayed her. She may have her insecurities, but she can be funny.

I love that the author didn't focus much on the romance in the story because I really enjoyed the friendship Georgia and Liss shared. I was happy when Georgia started to make a new friend and met Evelyn, but wasn't really happy with how the relationship goes. Although Evelyn too was facing her own problem, I couldn't help but to think that the story would be a bit better, especially with what happened towards the end. There a a few more things happening in the book, like the relationship with Georgia and her father after her mother's death, and Georgia, trying to be brave with her crush.

How to Be Brave is a story about losing someone, making mistakes, being brave and growing up. I enjoyed the story and the author's writing, but I also thought that the story could be better. I look forward to the next work from the author.

Sylvia Miloche is a successful book editor by day, D-list party girl by night, and has been dating New York City’s favorite playboy James Ryan for five years. But things are far from perfect. When the New York Post catches James with an intern, Sylvia’s already precarious life comes crashing down.

Lindsay Sekulich is a high school science teacher, wife, and mother of three in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. Her high school reunion is quickly approaching and that means the secrets of her bad-girl past, all of which she’s kept hidden from her husband, could come spilling out, revealing who she once was and the horrible things she’s done.

When Sylvia emerges in Scottsdale, seeking refuge in her hometown from the relentless gossip blogs, Lindsay finds herself alternately elated and terrified. The two were inseparable as teens, but a tragedy just before their senior year tore them apart. Sylvia, once a carefree, joyful girl always up for adventure, is a beaten down and broken adult. Now Lindsay must make a choice: rescue the friend who saved her in high school, or keep it all hidden to save her marriage from almost certain destruction.

I received a copy of The Other Side of Gemini by LG McCann from the author/CLP Blog Tours as part of the book tour.

The Other Side of Gemini was not what I’d expected to read, judging from the title, or the cover. This book was a story of Sylvia and Lindsay. They were best friends until one night that changed everything. Ten years later, Sylvia was a successful book editor. But her boyfriend, James, left her after the New York Post catches him with an intern.  Lindsay moved back to hometown. She’s a science teacher, and she’s married to Paul with three kids. But, Paul had absolutely no idea about his wife’s wild past. With their high school reunion is approaching, Lindsay has to convince Sylvia to go to the reunion with her before her husband found out what she has been hiding from him.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I love watching Sylvia and Lindsey’s relationship in their past and present. Their friendship was a bit dark, and emotional. I was a bit shocked to find out the reason why their friendship ended after high school. The supporting characters were amazing. I keep wondering what’s Paul’s reaction was going to be if he found out about his wife. I think LG McCann did a really great job in writing the book. This is definitely a great story of friendship.

Q&A with LG McCann

1. Please introduce yourself and your book.
Hi! I'm LG. My first novel The Other Side of Gemini was recently published by Soul Mate Publishers. I turned 30 this year, just got my first dog, and have to keep reminding myself that Gemini is finished and that I can't make any more revisions when I think of something I want to change (which still keeps happening!).

My book is a little Thelma & Louise, a little Valley of the Dolls, a little My So-Called-Life, and even a little Romy & Michele. It has the glossy life, the mom life, relationships good and bad, coming-of-age, wacky situations, and, of course, plenty of humor and love.

2. How do you come up with the idea of the book? What is your inspiration?
There wasn't any one inspiration for the book. There were a lot, actually, like my strongest friendships (my soul mates), my nastiest heartbreaks, my crazy jobs, and New York City.

I always start my books with my characters. The plot starts to reveal itself as I write my characters, often jumping from scene to scene, never linearly, just spending time in their worlds and in their heads. I rarely start a book with a plot in mind, and that was mostly the case with Gemini. All I knew was that I wanted to write a story about two best friends, one of whom lived in New York City, and their high school reunion. The kickoff to the book really started when I decided that Sylvia had been cheated on and had found out in a very public manner. The plot formed with each new anecdote I wrote, and once I finally had all the pieces, it was just a matter of sewing them together in the right order.

Life is my inspiration. Just as the characters form the plot, life informs my characters. I like to take little bits of little things I see every day and figure out if I can use them and where I can put them. Recently, I was trying to decide what to do about a character's career. I didn't want him to be a cop, but he needed to be a defender/protector-type. I was having a hard time choosing a career that inspired reverence. Driving to my day job one morning, a huge pickup truck passed me on the highway with a bumper stick that read COMBAT MEDIC. That was it! It was the last piece of information I needed to complete the character's basic story. Things like that are a really big deal.

3. Are there any scene in the book that resemble real experiences?
I don't think I should be telling this story, especially not on the internet, but I'm going to anyway...

There's one scene in the book where Lindsay and Sylvia, as teenagers, get into a car with two boys they don't know. The girls were used to catching rides home from parties with guys they didn't know well, if at all, but they learn it's a bad idea after one particular night: Instead of taking them to their houses, their supposedly chivalrous chauffeurs basically kidnap them and take them to a grungy apartment in a seedy part of Phoenix against their will.

This scene still makes me nervous, and not just because it was vaguely inspired by a real-life event. Actually, the real-life event was much less scary and, ultimately, kind of hilarious.

A very good friend and I were drowning our stress at a rooftop bar in Manhattan. We met and were dancing with two handsome, young Middle Eastern men who liked to flaunt their wealth. After we had all grown tired of the bar, the guys invited us to hang out with them in DUMBO (a fancy, revamped part of Brooklyn). They told us it a club, that there would be dancing and drinks. It didn't sound sketchy at the time.

I figured we would be taking a cab, but when we reached the pavement, the guys' friend pulled around in a shiny new BMW. My friend and I were directed into the back seat. I wasn't at all comfortable with being in a stranger's car, especially given how inebriated I was. But my friend insisted that we would be fine--that we were going to have fun! (Side note: She and I both lived in Harlem at the time and it was a really long subway ride home from DUMBO.) I don't know why I listened to her. A few blocks later, I panicked and tried to jump out of the car at a stoplight, but the driver just sped up and whizzed through the red light, keeping me in. He then locked the doors and continued to lock them every time I tried to get out (which happened a few times).

Before I knew it, we were crossing the Manhattan Bridge into a part of New York that I did NOT know! It's all a blur after that for me, because I was panicking the whole time, imagining the worst-case scenario. I didn't know if we were going to be ball-gagged and raped or filleted and hung up in some creepy closet. The men led us into a shiny new apartment building, past an old, greying doorman, and into an elevator. They punched the button for the highest floor and we rode to the top. When the elevator stopped, the doors opened and the guys walked out ahead of us. Thinking quickly, I grabbed my friend by the back of her coat as she moved to follow them and pulled her back in, simultaneously hitting the CLOSE DOOR button and praying the guys wouldn't notice. Just as the doors closed, we saw them run back toward us, but we were safe. We sprinted out of the elevator as soon as it hit the lobby and ran down the gleaming, tiled corridor to the front doors.

"You didn't see us!" I shouted at the old doorman as we whizzed past him. "You didn't see us!"

My friend beckoned for me to keep moving, and then we heard them: the guys had caught the other elevator and were right on our heels. We sprinted--sprinted!--and soon found ourselves under the Manhattan Bridge. We hid behind a parked car and watched as the guys stood at the entrance to their building and looked up and down the street for us. They didn't linger long; they gave up quickly and went back inside.

After my friend relieved herself under the bridge, we took a very expensive cab ride back over the bridge to Manhattan and made it home safe and sound.

In retrospect, I like to think they were weren't bad guys, that they were probably just messing with us. Still, it was super creepy, the situation was incredibly sketchy, and we shouldn't have been that dumb.

4. What do you like most about writing this book?
Finishing it! No, I'm kidding. Finishing it was actually bittersweet after four years of working on it. My favorite time of the day to write is after dark. I love to have a desk lamp on in a dark room, with a glass of wine (or maybe a bottle) next to me, and just get sucked into my writing. I will become so engrossed in the story that I'll have forgotten what I wrote the next morning (and not because of the wine). Getting lost in my characters and their worlds is so much fun. After I knew Lindsay and Sylvia really well, from so many angles, getting lost in their scenes became even more exciting.

5. What's the happiest thing you've been told recently?
The four sweetest words of the moment are "I loved your book!" I'm even hearing from people who I haven't spoken to since middle school. I'm loving all the encouraging words and being able to connect and reconnect with a lot of people.

6. What are you working on right now?
I'm so excited about my new project. It's a new women's fiction novel about a woman who runs her family's ski resort. It deals with the emergence of dark family secrets, having to grow up and take responsibility, and learning to let people in. There's a little thrill, a few laughs, and even some sexy times. It's been really fun to work on so far.

7. Anything you would like to say to your readers?
Just... THANK YOU! Especially for making it all the way to the end of this interview. Feel free to write to me, Tweet me, or find me on Facebook! I love hearing from people, especially readers. And maybe the occasional pervert. (KIDDING! Perverts need not apply.)

Author Bio:

LG McCann was born and raised in the Last Frontier. She spent her formative years on her family’s ski resort near Fairbanks where, if she wasn’t bombarding customers with rocketlaunched Barbie dolls, she was in the cubby under the stairs making up stories. After enduring the rest of her adolescence in Anchorage, LG tried her hand in the Lower-48, where she graduated from Hollins University summa cum laude with a double major in English and Film & Photography.

After six years in New York City, where she acquired unique experiences working in reality TV, the non-profit sector, and the publishing industry, LG still hadn’t found her calling. She still just wanted to be in that cubby making up stories. She wanted to write. These days, that’s exactly what she’s doing. But when she’s not writing or proofreading (or at her day job), you’ll most likely find LG playing in her garden, cooking with her partner Jonathan, attempting complex yoga moves, or passing out from exhaustion on her couch with her fuzzy assistant Emmy Cat.

Love. Marriage. Infidelity. Crises of identity. Death. Cupcakes. The themes in Right Click, the third and final installment in the Click series, couldn't be more pressing for this group of friends as they navigate through their 30's.

Another six months have passed since we last eavesdropped on the hilarious, poignant and oftentimes inappropriate email adventures of Renee and friends. As the story continues to unfold, relationships are tested and some need to be set "right" before everyone can find their "happily ever after."
I received a copy of this book from the author to provide an honest review.

When I started reading the first book of the book, Click, I was having a hard time to get into the format because it was written in the email form. But once I got used to the format, I found myself enjoying the book.

Right Click is the continuation of the Click Series. It focused on Renee’s email exchange with her friends – Ethan, Shelley, Ashley and Mark. I really like the group. I love how they were always looking after each other. What a beautiful friendship they shared!

Reading the Click series by Lisa Becker kind of makes me feel like I’m prying into somebody else’s business /life because it was written in the email form.  And it was fun. The Right Click was an easy and quick read. It was very hard to put down the book because I really enjoyed it. There were friendship, romance, humor, and drama – all in the same book and the series.

Right Click (and the other books in the series) is definitely a must read for those who were looking for something sweet, short and easy read.

Review: Yes, Chef! by Lisa Joy + Q&A

Yes, Chef!

Sassy foodie Becca Stone is over her job taking reservations in one of London's most successful restaurant empires. So when she is unexpectedly catapulted into working as PA to celebrity chef, Damien Malone, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime.

Becca is quickly caught up in an exciting whirlwind of travel, reality TV and opening nights, and even her usually abysmal love life takes a turn for the better. But as Becca is slowly consumed by the chaos of life in the spotlight, she begins to lose touch with her friends, her heart and even with reality. Working with Damien has its challenges and she is soon struggling with his increasingly outrageous demands and sleazy advances, all while managing the ridiculous requests of his self-centered wife. It takes a disastrous trip to Italy for Becca to realize that she may have thrown away exactly what she's been looking for all along.

Inspired by real-life adventures, this deliciously funny and romantic story reveals a tantalizing glimpse of the trendy restaurant scene: a world where chefs are treated like rock stars, and cooking isn't all that goes on in the kitchen.
I’m a sucker for chick lit with a culinary theme book. When I saw the cover and the title for Lisa Joy’s Yes, Chef!, I knew that I have to add this book into my tbr list.

Becca Stone worked with the reservation department for one of London’s successful restaurant empire.  She was pushed to work for as a PA for Damien Malone, a famous celebrity chef, when his PA, Abigail was going on a vacation. Becca learned that working as Damien’s PA isn’t as exciting as she thought it would be. Becca had to cope with Damien’s (and his wife) demands, while struggling to keep up with her friends, and finding her happiness.

Yes, Chef! was definitely a good debut by Lisa Joy. The book wasn’t what I was expecting to read, judging from the blurb. But it was interesting to read how Becca Stone was going to survive working as the Damien’s PA. Becca was a great character. I have to admit that she wasn’t very likable at first, but I slowly start to like her as I watch how she grew up and finding out what she really want throughout the story.

My only complain is that the story was a bit rushed towards the end. I do think that the book could be, and should be longer. I wish there were more moments/scene of Becca working with Damien. I’d love to know more about how was it to work as a celebrity chef’s PA. All that juicy drama and stuff.

Overall, Yes, Chef was an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to those who love a book with a hint of culinary theme.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Q&A with Lisa Joy

1. Please introduce yourself and your book.
Hello! I’m Lisa Joy and I live in Melbourne, Australia which is a wonderful foodie city. Yes, Chef! is my debut novel and it was inspired by my years working in the restaurant industry as a manager, reservations coordinator, host, waitress and PA. In addition to writing novels I still work part time as PA to a well known Melbourne chef but fortunately for me he is not like the bully celebrity chef in my book. I’ve never worked in the kitchen but I do love to bake and I live on a farm that supplies vegetables and berries to some of Melbourne’s top restaurants.

2. What inspired you to write?
I love the feeling of being taken out of your ordinary existence and experiencing something extraordinary that reading gives you. I had a teacher in high school that encouraged my short stories but I didn’t consider writing as a profession until about five years ago. Writing makes me feel at peace and gives me a rush all at the same time so it’s something I would do even if my stories weren’t published.

3. Can you relate yourself to any of the characters? Did you experience anything Becca had experienced?
I can certainly relate to the feeling of uncertainty the heroine Becca Stone feels in regards to her career and love life. The angst and bitterness that comes from not knowing your passion in life and experiencing a run of bad dates with scoundrels. I can also relate to the profoundly comforting feeling that comes when you do finally find someone that loves you just as you are.

4. What is the biggest challenge in working in restaurant business?
The hours are long and unless you are dating someone in the industry it’s difficult to find time to spend with your partner. I think one of the hardest things is meeting the customers’ expectations, which in our foodie culture, can sometimes be unrealistic. Some chefs say food is art but ultimately it’s just diner.

5. And what is the biggest challenge in writing this book?
I’d struggled with another novel before Yes, Chef! because I placed so much pressure on myself to become published that I forgot to enjoy the process of writing. With Yes, Chef! my biggest challenge was to drive all thoughts of publication from my mind and write the story as though I were writing it for my good friends. In the end it worked because not worrying so much about becoming a publish author freed up my writing and allowed me not only to finish the book in less than six months but also to really enjoy writing it.

6. Grade your book. How many stars out of a perfect score of 5 stars? Please give the reason too.
I’m not sure if I can do this! I’ve always been very aware that novels are subjective and what I consider to be 5 stars someone else may only rate 1 star. But if I must rate my book, I would like to give Yes, Chef! 5 stars because it brought me so much happiness and enjoyment and I have had so many messages from readers saying it did the same for them.

7. What are you working on right now?
I’m doing lots of promotion work for Yes, Chef! which I love. I’m so pleased readers are taking an interest in the book. I’ve also begun working on my next novel, another foodie adventure-romance set in England and Italy. This book will again touch on the theme of discovering what you truly want from life, even if it’s not what others expect of you. I’m taking a break from restaurants to explore the lush farms of the Italian countryside and the peace and happiness cooking and eating can bring.

8. Anything you would like to say to your readers?
Thank you! I really hope you enjoy reading Yes, Chef! as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you’d like to read more about the research for my next book, news from my farm and life as a writer or recipes from some of the worlds top chefs please visit my journal http://www.lisajoyauthor.com/journal

Review: Bridesmaids by Jane Costello

Bridesmaids
by Jane Costello

Genre: Chick Lit, Romance, Drama
Publication: May 2008
Format: Paperback, 419 pages

With less than an hour to go before her best friend, Grace, is to walk down the aisle, Evie is attempting to fulfil her most important bridesmaid role: to deposit the bride at the start-line at the appointed time. But with a bride famed for her chaotic sense of time, and the bride's daughter busy mashing Molton Brown into the expensive hotel carpet, minus underwear, the odds are stacked against her . . .

At least she has her new 'chicken fillet' boob-enhancers to make her feel special. That is, until these are spotted poking over the top of her dress. So spotted by Jack - the most ruggedly attractive man Evie has ever laid eyes on. Evie is twenty-seven; a sparkly, down-to-earth journalist. She has never been in love and has started to fret that she never will be. Small wonder, then, that the prospect of being bridesmaid at no less than three impending weddings is one that fills her with trepidation.

Things get worse when Evie learns that Jack is her friend Valentina's date. Valentina is beautiful, shallow and self-obsessed. Her dates tend to be mirror-images. Which can mean only one thing: Jack can't possibly be as good as he seems. But as they sit together talking late into the night, Evie finds herself yearning to believe he's all real.
In Bridesmaids, Evie has never really been in love. Her relationships with her exes doesn’t last very long. And this year, she’s the bridesmaid at three weddings. It was on Grace, her best friend’s wedding that she met the handsome Jack. Then she found out that Jack was her friend, Valentina’s date. Knowing the type of guy Valentina tend to date, surely Jack can’t possibly be as good as he look. But when Evie constantly met Jack at different weddings, Evie learned that Jack was not what she thought he might be.

This book was very enjoyable. It was hard to put it down once I start to pick it up. It kinda reminds me of why I started to read chick lit years ago. The romance, the humor (yes, I’m a big fan of rom com) and the characters. Evie was a wonderful character. I love most of her dialogue.  They are mostly funny. And even though there are a few embarrassing moments for Evie, it doesn’t sound too forced. Bridesmaids had the right amount romance, humor and drama. I love the friendship between Evie, Grace, Georgia and Valentina, although Valentina usually drives me crazy. I would definitely recommend Bridesmaids to those who were looking for a light and humorous read.
